At the door (Stockholm)

Q Hur många är ni? — How many of you are there?Stockholm

They'll say Ni får vänta lite. — You'll have to wait a bit.

Q Leg, tack. — ID, please.

  • A Här har du. — Here you go.

They'll say Tack, gå in. — Thanks — go on in.

Q Vad kostar inträdet? — How much is it to get in?

  • A Hundrafemtio. — A hundred and fifty.

Q Finns det garderob? — Is there a cloakroom?

  • A Ja, sjuttio kronor. — Yes, seventy kronor.

Coat check is close to compulsory in a Swedish winter, and they will not let you carry a big coat inside.

Q Står ni på listan? — Are you on the list?

  • A Ja, på [NAMN]. — Yes, under [NAME].
  • A Nej, går det ändå? — No — can we get in anyway?

They'll say Det löser sig. — We'll sort it out.

Q Är det åldersgräns? — Is there an age limit?

  • A Tjugo år ikväll. — Twenty tonight.

Clubs set their own limit and it is often 20, 23 or higher — well above the legal 18. It is usually on the door.

Q Inte ikväll. — Not tonight.

  • A Okej, ha det bra. — Okay — have a good one.

They'll say Nästa! — Next!

Arguing with a Swedish doorman is the one reliable way to make the refusal permanent.

Q Spelar de house ikväll? — Are they playing house tonight?

  • A Techno, hela natten. — Techno, all night.

Making friends & moving on

Q Är ni härifrån? — Are you from here?

  • A Ja, vi bor i Söder. — Yes, we live in Söder.

Q Ska vi gå vidare någonstans? — Shall we move on somewhere?

  • A Gärna, vart då? — Yes — where to?

Q Är du här själv? — Are you here on your own?

  • A Nej, med kompisar. — No, with friends.
  • A Ja, just nu. — Yes, right now.

They'll say Häng med oss. — Come and hang out with us.

Q Vart ska ni sen? — Where are you off to after this?

  • A Hem till en kompis. — Back to a friend's place.

Q Vill du ha något att dricka? — Do you want something to drink?

  • A Gärna, en öl. — Yes please — a beer.
  • A Tack, jag har kvar. — Thanks, I've still got one.

They'll say Jag fixar. — I'll get it.

Q Har ni något bra ställe att rekommendera? — Do you know anywhere good to recommend?

  • A Testa stället runt hörnet. — Try the place round the corner.

Q Jag måste dra. — I've got to head off.

  • A Redan? Stanna lite till! — Already? Stay a bit longer!

They'll say Vi ses! — See you!

Q Ska vi dela en taxi? — Shall we split a taxi?
