Q ¿Te ayudo en algo? — Can I help you with anything?

• A Solo estoy mirando, gracias. — Just looking, thanks.
• A Sí, busco __. — Yes, I'm looking for __.

They'll say Tranquilo/a, lo que necesites. — No worries, whatever you need.

Q ¿Cuánto vale? — How much is it?

They'll say Son quince euros. — It's fifteen euros.

"¿Cuánto vale?" is very common in Spain (also "¿Cuánto cuesta?").

Q ¿Qué talla usas? — What size are you?

• A La M, creo. — M, I think.
• A No estoy seguro/a, ¿me la puedo probar? — Not sure, can I try it on?

They'll say Los probadores están al fondo. — The fitting rooms are at the back.

"Talla" = clothes size; "número" = shoe size.

Q ¿Aceptáis tarjeta? — Do you accept card?

They'll say Sí, a partir de cinco euros. — Yes, from five euros up.

Some small shops have a card minimum.

Q ¿Lo tienes en otro color? — Do you have it in another colour?

• A En negro y en beige. — In black and in beige.

Q ¿Se puede devolver? — Can this be returned?

• A Con el ticket, treinta días. — With the receipt, thirty days.

Q ¿Buscas algo en concreto? — Are you looking for anything in particular?

• A Gracias, ya miro yo. — Thanks, I'll have a look myself.

They'll say Cualquier cosa me dices. — Just say if you need anything.

Q ¿Me lo puedes guardar hasta luego? — Could you hold it for me until later?

• A Hasta las ocho, sin problema. — Until eight, no problem.

Q ¡Mira, guapo/guapa! ¿Qué te pongo? — Hey, handsome/beautiful! What can I get you?

• A ¿A cómo están los tomates? — How much are the tomatoes?

They'll say A dos euros el kilo. — Two euros a kilo.

"¿A cómo está(n)…?" is the market way to ask produce prices.

Q ¿Me haces un precio si llevo dos? — Can you give me a deal if I take two?

They'll say Va, te los dejo en cinco. — Alright, I'll give them to you for five.

Haggle at flea markets (El Rastro), not in normal shops.

Q Uf, es un poco caro. ¿Es tu último precio? — Oof, a bit pricey. Is that your best price?

They'll say Te lo dejo en __ y ya está. — I'll do __ and that's it.

Q Me lo llevo. ¿Me lo pones en una bolsa? — I'll take it. Can you bag it?

They'll say Toma, y gracias, majo/maja. — Here you go, and thanks, love.

"Majo/maja" = nice/friendly, very Spain.

Q ¿Quién es el último? — Who's last in the queue?

• A Yo voy detrás de la señora. — I'm behind this lady.
• A Soy yo. — That's me.

They'll say Pues yo voy detrás de ti. — Then I'm behind you.

Spain does not form lines. You call out to find who you follow, and you answer when the next person asks. Getting this right is the single clearest sign you've been here before.

Q Ponme medio kilo. — Half a kilo, please.

• A Ahí va, medio kilo justo. — There you go — half a kilo exactly.

Q ¿Está maduro para hoy? — Is this ripe for today?

• A Para mañana mejor. — Better for tomorrow.

Q ¿Me lo dejas en cinco? — Can you do it for five?

• A Cinco y medio y es tuyo. — Five fifty and it's yours.
