Getting around (taxi + metro)

Q Perdona, ¿dónde está la parada de taxis? — Excuse me, where's the taxi rank?

• A Saliendo, a la derecha. — Out the doors, on the right.

They'll say Sigue los carteles. — Follow the signs.

Swap taxis for autobús or tren and the question still works.

Q ¿Cuánto cuesta ir al centro? — How much is it to the centre?

• A Unos 30 euros. — About 30 euros.
• A Depende del tráfico. — Depends on the traffic.

They'll say Sube, que te llevo. — Hop in, I'll take you.

Ask before the bags go in the boot, not after.

Q ¿Dónde se coge el metro al centro? — Where do I get the metro into town?

• A Bajando, planta cero. — Downstairs, level zero.

Q ¿Me enseña el pasaporte? — Can I see your passport?

• A Aquí tiene. — Here you are.

They'll say Gracias, puede pasar. — Thank you — go ahead.

Q ¿Dónde recojo las maletas? — Where do I collect my bags?

• A Cinta cuatro, al fondo. — Belt four, right at the end.

Q ¿Hay un cajero por aquí? — Is there a cash machine around here?

• A Justo al lado de la farmacia. — Right next to the pharmacy.

Q ¿Dónde compro un billete? — Where do I buy a ticket?

• A En la máquina de allí. — At the machine over there.
• A En la app va mejor. — The app is easier.

Q ¿Algo que declarar? — Anything to declare?

• A No, nada. — No, nothing.

They'll say Puede seguir. — You can go on.

Q ¿A dónde vamos? — Where to?

Q Creo que voy en dirección contraria. — I think I'm going the wrong way.

• A Te bajas en la siguiente y cambias de andén. — Get off at the next one and change platforms.

Q Perdona, ¿esto para __ es por aquí? — Excuse me, is this the way to __?

They'll say Sí, todo recto y a la izquierda. — Yes, straight ahead and to the left.

"Todo recto" = straight ahead.

Q ¿Está muy lejos? — Is it far?

They'll say Andando, diez minutos. — Ten minutes on foot.

Q Creo que me he perdido. — I think I'm lost.

They'll say ¿A dónde quieres ir? — Where do you want to go?

Q ¿Nos llevas al centro? Somos tres. — Can you take us to the center? There's three of us.young

They'll say Subid, pero de tres como mucho. — Get in, but three max.

Splitting the fare: "pagamos a medias" = let's split it.

Q Déjanos aquí mismo, gracias. — Just drop us right here, thanks.

They'll say Son ocho euros. — That's eight euros.

Q ¿Me lo señalas en el mapa? — Can you point it out on the map?

• A Estamos aquí, tú vas ahí. — We're here — you want to be there.

Q ¿Pasa algún búho por aquí? — Does a night bus come through here?

• A El N1, cada veinte minutos. — The N1, every twenty minutes.

Night buses are búhos — owls. Every big Spanish city runs them once the metro shuts, and they all leave from one central square.

Q ¿Hay alguna calle más iluminada? — Is there a better-lit street?

• A Sube por Gran Vía, mejor. — Go up Gran Vía instead.
