They'll say Sagen Sie Bescheid. — Just say if you need anything.

Q Haben Sie das eine Nummer größer? — Do you have this one size bigger?

• A Ich schaue im Lager. — I'll check the stockroom.

Q Kann ich das anprobieren? — Can I try this on?

• A Klar, die Kabinen sind hinten. — Sure, the fitting rooms are at the back.

Q Was kostet das? — How much is this?

• A Neunzehn neunzig. — Nineteen ninety.

Q Kann ich mit Karte zahlen? — Can I pay by card?

• A Karte geht, ja. — Card's fine, yes.
• A Nur bar, tut mir leid. — Cash only, sorry.

Worth asking first. Plenty of small German shops, bakeries and bars are still cash-only.

Q Kann ich das hier umtauschen? — Can I exchange this?

• A Mit Kassenbon, ja. — With the receipt, yes.

Q Brauchen Sie eine Tüte? — Do you need a bag?

• A Ja, bitte. — Yes, please.
• A Nein, passt schon. — No, I'm fine.

They'll say Macht zwanzig Cent. — That's twenty cents.

Q Bis wann haben Sie offen? — How late are you open?

• A Bis acht, sonntags zu. — Until eight — closed Sundays.

Sunday closing is near-total in Germany. Plan Saturday, or find a Späti or a station shop.

Q Haben Sie's passend? — Have you got it exact?

• A Moment, ich schaue. — One moment, let me look.
• A Nein, leider nicht. — No, sorry.

They'll say Geht auch so. — That's fine too.

Q Wo ist der Pfandautomat? — Where's the bottle return machine?

• A Hinten links, neben dem Eingang. — Back left, next to the entrance.

Pfand is 8–25 cents a bottle. The machine prints a voucher you hand in at the till.

Q Nächster, bitte! — Next, please!

• A Ja, ich komme. — Yes, coming.

They'll say Alles zusammen? — All together?

Q Ist da Pfand drauf? — Is there a deposit on that?

• A Ja, fünfundzwanzig Cent. — Yes, twenty-five cents.

Q Wo finde ich Milch? — Where do I find milk?

• A Gang drei. — Aisle three.

Q Haben Sie eine Payback-Karte? — Do you have a loyalty card?

They'll say Kein Problem. — No problem.

Q Muss ich das Obst selbst wiegen? — Do I have to weigh the fruit myself?

• A Ja, an der Waage da drüben. — Yes, at the scale over there.

Q Wollen Sie schon mal einpacken? — Do you want to start packing?

They'll say Kein Stress. — No rush.

German checkouts move fast and you bag your own shopping while they scan. Nobody will help — it is not rudeness.
