At a restaurant (Germany)

Q Haben Sie einen Tisch für zwei? — Table for two?

• A Ja. — Yes.
• A Leider ausgebucht. — Unfortunately fully booked.

They'll say Mit Reservierung? — Do you have a reservation?

Q Die Rechnung, bitte. — The bill, please.

• A Kommt sofort. — Coming right up.

They'll say Mit Karte oder bar? — Card or cash?

Cash is still common — plenty of places are card-shy.

Q Ein Leitungswasser, bitte. — Tap water, please.

• A Geht klar. — Sure thing.
• A Haben wir. — We have that.

They'll say Sonst noch was? — Anything else?

Tap water isn't automatic in Germany — you have to ask for it by name.

Q Möchten Sie schon bestellen? — Are you ready to order?

• A Ja, wir sind so weit. — Yes, we're ready.
• A Noch zwei Minuten, bitte. — Two more minutes, please.

They'll say Ich komme gleich wieder. — I'll come back in a moment.

Q Was können Sie empfehlen? — What would you recommend?

• A Das Schnitzel geht am besten. — The schnitzel is the most popular.

Q Ich hätte gern das Schnitzel. — I'd like the schnitzel.

• A Gerne. Dazu was zu trinken? — Of course. Anything to drink with that?

"Ich hätte gern" is the polite default for ordering anything, food or drink.

Q Entschuldigung, das habe ich nicht bestellt. — Excuse me, I didn't order this.

• A Oh, Entschuldigung — ich tausche es um. — Oh, sorry — I'll swap it.

Q Hat es geschmeckt? — Did you enjoy it?

• A Sehr gut, danke. — Very good, thank you.
• A Ja, super. — Yes, great.

They'll say Das freut mich. — Glad to hear it.
