Ordering a beer/food like a local (Germany)

Q → A → what they'll probably say

Short answerIn Germany, say Ein Bier, bitte. — A beer, please.

Q Was möchten Sie trinken? — What would you like to drink? (formal Sie)

  • A Ein Bier, bitte. — A beer, please.
  • A Ein Helles, bitte. — A pale lager, please — common in the south.

They'll say Vom Fass oder aus der Flasche? — Draft or bottle?

"Ein Helles" is the southern default. Servers open with the formal Sie.

Q Vom Fass oder aus der Flasche? — Draft or bottle?

  • A Vom Fass, bitte. — Draft, please.
  • A Aus der Flasche, bitte. — Bottle, please.

They'll say Welche Marke? — Which brand?

Q Maß oder Halbe? — Litre or half-litre?Bayern

  • A Eine Maß, bitte. — A litre, please (Bayern only).
  • A Eine Halbe, bitte. — A half-litre, please.

They'll say Gute Wahl. — Good choice.

Size is its own question, asked after you've said what you want and whether it's draft. It's a Bavarian one: a Maß is the litre stein, a Halbe the half-litre. Order a Maß in Hamburg and you'll get a look. Die Maß is feminine, so it's eine Maß, not einen.

Q Möchten Sie auch was zu essen? — Want food too?

  • A Nur was Kleines. — Just something small.
  • A Vielleicht Pommes. — Maybe fries.

They'll say Kommt sofort. — Coming right up.

Q Zahlen Sie zusammen oder getrennt? — Together or split?

  • A Zusammen. — Together.
  • A Getrennt, bitte. — Separately, please.

They'll say Mit Karte oder bar? — Card or cash?

Splitting the bill is completely normal and expected.

Q Was habt ihr vom Fass? — What have you got on tap?

  • A Pils, Helles und ein Weizen. — Pils, pale lager and a wheat beer.
  • A Nur Pils. — Just Pils.

Asking this rather than pointing at a tap handle is most of the difference.

Q Noch ein Bier? — Another beer?

  • A Ja, gerne. — Yes, please.
  • A Nein danke, ich hab genug. — No thanks, I've had enough.

They'll say Mach ich. — Will do.

Q Noch einen Absacker? — One for the road?

  • A Ja, einen kleinen. — Yes, a small one.
  • A Nein, ich muss morgen früh raus. — No, I've got an early start.

They'll say Na dann, Prost! — Cheers then!

Ein Absacker is the last drink of the night — literally the one that makes you sink.
